I snapped this photo in the Orthodox district of Jerusalem in 2006. Through the drizzling bus window I saw that flash of yellow, a little girl’s umbrella contrasting the dogmatic statement of a man in black. It afforded relief from the pervasive gray scale. But for that bit of sunshine and a few other punctuations of pink, purple and blue, the scene would have seemed void of promise. And that’s where I saw myself then, somewhere between the black and yellow.
